Advice On Hosting An Informal Dinner Party
posted on 03/29/2009
Many people reach a point in their social life where they desire a change. Meeting others for a dinner out or drinks and dancing are standard faire, but an alternate situation that will provide a chance to get to know others is to host a dinner party. The simplest party to plan is an informal get together.
Plan the type of setting that the party will maintain. An informal party may require others to bring a bottle of liquor or other drink with them to share to defray the cost of the party. This ensures that there will be something there for everyone, as well as, a chance for some to sample other beverages that they have not had a chance to sample.
Gather all the condiments and equipment for a standard bar. Don't forget to include a blender and a shaker set. A good selection of condiments will include olives, onions, cherries, limes, lemons, and oranges. Be sure to have a cooler with plenty of ice on hand.
Select a variety of finger food to serve during drinks to lessen the effect of the alcohol on your guests. The finger foods should be light and varied.
Play some music in the background at a low volume to break the silence. This will tend to encourage your guests to talk to each other.
Plan the dinner to include items that will allow most guests to meet any dietary restrictions. During the invitation phase of the party planning attempt to find out if their are any particular needs that you will want to accommodate such as, diabetics, kosher, vegetarian or food allergies. The easiest way to work around these restrictions is by ensuring a variety of alternatives to choose from on the menu.
Serve water with dinner to cleanse the palate and give the alcohol time to dissipate from earlier.
Get to know your guests to a greater degree than you have before. Deepen a friendship in this different type of setting from the norm. Also, look upon this opportunity to show your acquaintances your appreciation of them by your attention to the details.

To me, informal means INFORMAL -- like maybe bring a dish!
