Advice On A Car That Won't Start
posted on 06/11/2009
There are many possible reasons a vehicle will not start. A very simple problem that can be very embarrassing is being out of fuel. This happens to most of us once in our lifetime, and if we are lucky we see what the problem is before help arrives on the scene!
Once this simple matter has been ruled out, the next question is whether the problem is in the electrical, fuel or mechanical systems. The first indication to consider is whether any sound at all is made when the key is turned in the ignition. If there is a clicking sound with no other responses, the electrical system is probably at fault. Look to see whether other things are working, such as the interior dome light. If not, re-consider the battery's health. If so, check the fuses: There will be a diagram or list of fuses in the owner's manual, and there is often a diagram on the fuse box cover as well. Look for those that are relevant to starting the vehicle and check them. Fuses are so inexpensive that it is often easiest to simply change out those that may be at fault; just make sure to replace fuses according to the color codes. Another electrical problem can result from the anti-theft alarm system having been activated or requiring a new fuse. Look at the owner's manual to check remedies for this situation.
What about the fuel system? If there is water, ice or vapor in the fuel line it will keep the engine from starting - add "dry gas", wait a bit and try again. Look for holes or other damage in the fuel line, and check that the fuel pump or injection system is working, too. If the vehicle turns over but will not start, check the idle adjustment, the air and the fuel filters.
If none of these suggestions pan out, the problem is likely beyond a do-it-yourself fix. If your mechanic can stop by, that would be awesome. If not, have the vehicle towed in for repairs.
