Advice On My Guest Bathroom
posted on 06/11/2009
Decorating small bathrooms is a challenge, especially if you need to work with certain givens -- like tile and countertop materials or colors. Here are a few tips and ideas.
One thing that caught my attention in this request is the idea that the small bathroom feels like an elevator. It could be very whimsical and fun to decorate it as if you are in an elevator! So, off you go to visit some buildings with elevators to get some ideas -- and to take some digital pictures (film is okay too, but is less flexible for what I want to suggest). Make sure you get pictures of the button panel where you choose floors, and the indicators that show which floor you are on. Either take a picture of the inspection certification, or see if the building personnel will let you photocopy it. Back home, choose among the pictures for the best representations, print them and frame them in unobtrusive frames -- or simply laminate them. Place them appropriately in the bathroom to accent the idea, "I am in an elevator!" You can add other images that represent the location of the elevator -- such as merchandise that will be on the second floor, or pictures of whose "offices" are in this building.
Besides this whimsy, here are other ideas: For paint, choose a light pink with chocolate undertones, or the sort of lavender gray museums use that shows off everything very well. this will not only go with the tile and countertops -- it will go with the people! People simply look better in settings that avoid underlying yellow tones.
Next, choose something to open out the space: Mirrors can do this, but be careful since people don't necessarily want to see themselves in a mirror as they are using the bathroom! Consider artwork that will give an open feel: Sometimes this can be accomplished by finding an old paned window and using it as the frame for an outdoor scene. Or choose something that represents the expansive out of doors.
Still not clicking? Try a theme that is light, airy and leaves you with a refreshing feeling: this might be a beach theme, for example.
Last, a very few of us like to feel as closed in as the space actually is -- dark colors, a library them, or hanging our diplomas in the guest bathroom are plusses for folks like me. Please excuse my untidiness, but -- Here's a shot of my current bathroom!

Okay, a bit cluttered, but the picture demonstrates the use of darker, vibrant colors. LOVE the idea about deocrating the tiny bathroom as an elevator -- that's cool!
