Advice On How To Create A Memorable Cover Letter
posted on 07/02/2009
When you are looking for a job or a potential career and need to include a resume, it is always a good idea to include a cover letter as well. In fact, some employers require a cover letter. This article is meant to provide advice on how to create a great cover letter that will catch the employers interest and help you to get that second interview.
First, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with what a cover letter actually is. It would be a great idea to look online to see examples of cover letters to see the different ways that they can be formatted and also what needs to be included.
Keep it short. Chances are that employers have multiple resumes, applications and cover letters to go through. If you write them a book to introduce your resume, they may become overwhelmed and read only portions of your cover letter or they may skip it completely not allowing you a chance to show your full potential.
Cover letters are meant to introduce your resume, not to tell your life story. Honestly, a small opening paragraph consisting of 2-3 sentences to introduce yourself and what you are applying for is more than sufficient for the first paragraph. There should also be a short middle section to the cover letter to advise why you should have the position and the top reasons why you are the most qualified. The middle section should be a bit longer than the first section but still remember to keep it short. Also, there should be a closing paragraph. This paragraph is meant to thank the employer for their time and to let them know that you have further information if they require it and that you would be happy to supply it upon request. Also, please don't forget to add your contact information to the cover letter just as you do with your resume. The employer needs to know who they are contacting for the position. Lastly, a cover letter is just that, a letter. Please be sure to address the letter as such. This will be outlined more in the examples that you can find online for a better idea of how to format your letter based on the position that you are applying for.
One last thing, use power words! Instead of saying things like "I think that I would be the perfect fit for this position." say something more along the lines of "I know that I would be the perfect fit for this position." Employers generally like confidence. This is especially true for a management or supervisory position. Keep in mind though that there is a thin line between confident and cocky, be careful not to cross it. Good luck with your job or career hunt! I hope that this information was helpful!

You are so right. when I finally had the chance to make my first hire, I only had time to read short cover letters. My boss, Diane Garnick, automatically throws away cover letters that are more than one page long.
