Advice On Choosing A New Family Dog
posted on 07/03/2009
It's always exciting to decide to get a new dog for the family, but there are a few things you should take into consideration before getting your new pet.
For starters, it's important to first consider the activity level you want your new dog to have. Whether you would like a lazy dog, or a dog that will be happy to go jogging with you each morning, it's important to do some homework on different breeds that will fit your lifestyle. Some dogs may also require more space than others. Big dogs often need room to run and play in a yard, while smaller dogs often fit apartment spaces better.
Second, you should consider the size of the dog you're thinking of getting. If you have children or elderly members in your family, it's important to make sure that the size of the dog will be safe and comfortable for everyone who lives, or frequently visits your home.
Third, getting a new dog is a lot to adjust to, but you should be sure before you adopt any new animal that their temperament is something you can be comfortable with. Some dogs are more hyper than others, some bark more than others, and some are even skittish or by nature, more aggressive than others.
Finally, take responsibility and be a good pet owner, by learning how to teach your dog basic commands like sit, stay and come. Being able to have basic commands for your dog, and developing that bond and respect is the first key to a long lasting, loving relationship with your new canine friend.
