Laundry stains are a problem that everyone faces some time or another in their life. Stains cause frustration and can end up costing a person a lot of money. Millions of dollars are spent each year in creating products which claim supremacy in getting out stains. Although these products usually work well, they can be expensive. Many times products found in the home, hold the same ability to rid garments of stains, but cost much less.
Ink
Ever get ink on a shirt or pants? If you have, before running to an expensive dry cleaner, try putting hairspray on it and washing it in cold water as soon as possible. Hairspray works quite well in removing most ink stains. It doesn't matter the kind of hairspray, just saturate the stain well.
Oil
Most people have had an oil stain on a piece of clothing. Oil stains can be tricky and can set in easily. If you get oil on a piece of clothing, try spraying the stain with 409 and washing the garment as soon as possible. 409 has a great oil lifting ability. It is wise to check for color fastness in a non-conspicuous area first.
Everyday Stains
Another great household product used for a variety of stains is shampoo. It is best to use a white or clear non-perfumed shampoo. Rub some shampoo on the stain and wash in cool water.
Odor
The final stain fighter is great for the hidden stain of odor. Ever have those wash cloths or dish towels that still smell "musty" when they get wet, even after being washed? The best remedy for those is to add a cup of vinegar and a half of a cup of baking soda to the wash. Add the detergent as normal, but pour the vinegar and baking soda in as the machine is filling with water. It is best to wash on hot.
Whether you are using hairspray, 409, shampoo, or vinegar and baking soda, the key to getting a stain out is treating it when it is still wet and washing it as soon as possible. Never send a stain through the dryer! It is also a good idea to try to get the stain out using cold water because warm or hot water can set the stain. The next time you get a stain try one of these home remedies. They are easy to do and easy on the pocket book!!
