Advice On Re-Potty Training An Undisciplined Canine
posted on 07/08/2009
Potty training a canine and re-potty training is quite common among dog owners. Firstly, you need not worry that there is something wrong with your dog if he suddenly starts to use the potty throughout your home. However, it is a clear sign that the dog lacks discipline. Yelling and screaming at the dog will not rectify the situation. I would suggest that you re-potty train him.
The first step you must take toward rearing an obedient dog that will refrain from going to the bathroom throughout your house as well as on your furniture is to remove the dog from the couch when he jumps on it. Don't yell at the dog, or scream "No!" because he will not understand what he did wrong and this will only make your dog nervous and cause an unhealthy relationship between master and dog. You need not raise your voice. Simply make a noise like, "Eh Eh". You can also sit on the couch and call the dog over.
Then, reward him with a small treat if he stands before you rather than jumps upon the couch. Essentially, your goal should be to train him to understand that he may not climb on to the couch at all.
Once you have taken care of this important step, you can begin to re-potty train him. Use the wee wee pad method or whichever way worked the first time he was trained. Finally, this is the most crucial step you must take. After you feed the dog a meal (aim to feed him at the same time every day), let him out into the yard and/or immediately take him for a walk. He will most definitely take that time to go to the bathroom outdoors. If you have a wee wee pad set up in a designated area in the home, place the dog in that area and make sure he remains there until he has gone to the bathroom. You can reward him thereafter.
You must work with your dog and develop a solid routine that he can get in the habit of following. After the first week, it should become second nature.
