Advice On How To Prepare Yourself For College Starting Freshman Year
posted on 07/15/2009
1. Begin by taking the most challenging coarseload you can handle. It is better to have 4 years of college prep math and get all B's than only 2 years of math with A's!
2. Find your passion and expand. If you love art, take a continuing education course in painting on Saturday's, want to be an engineer? attend lego camp, love children? Volunteer to teach swimming lessons, etc..
3. Network. Talk to everyone you know. Even if you are shy, come up with a short description of what your interests are. Be prepared to share this with everyone you know, your parents, teachers, guidance counselors, admissions officers, parents' friends etc.. Nobody knows you as well as you do. Be confident. Sell yourself. This will lead to more opportunities to get involved in things you love, eventually leading naturally to getting into the college of your choice.
4. Read. Write. Read. Write. The more the read, the more you know. The more you write, the better writer you become. This is all preparation for college. Do it often. If you love animals, visit your local library and find a magazine all about animals, is fashion your thing? read about celebrities. Love a good romance? Read Little Women. It doesn't matter what you read (gasp!!!) just that you do it and do it often. Follow your interests and become an expert in that area. This will make you smart and interesting!
5. Most importantly, communicate with your guidance counselor and parents. Tell them your goals, passions, and ask for advice. Presenting them with a list of your talents, passions, and goals will help them personalize their advice.
Good Luck!!! Listen to your SELF and you will shine!
