Advice On Adult Summer Softball Leagues
posted on 08/06/2009
Adult summer softball leagues can be a great way to stay in shape and have fun at the same time. There are women's teams, men's teams, and co-ed teams as well. Regardless, there are a few key things to remember when starting up a summer softball team.
Finding a team can be the most challenging part about playing summer softball. If you've got a group of friends who really want to play, then this task becomes simpler. Co-Ed teams are often easier to put together because it allows husbands and wives and other couples to play together. However, if you don't know anybody or are new to a town, there are a few ways you can still find a team. For starters, look on craigslist for teams advertising a need for players. Or, you can post your own ad on craigslist. In some cities, you can call the parks and recreation office and they will help set you up with a team. Lastly, show up at the fields where you know games are going on. Often times, a team will be short a player and you can volunteer to play.
Whether you play fastpitch, slowpitch, or both, it's important to keep the games fun, even when you're super competitive. Nobody wants to play with someone who is constantly yelling or bringing the team down. In addition, the referees don't want to deal with that either. If you get thrown out of a game for poor sportsmanship, you're only letting your team down. Besides, isn't the whole point in joining a team to play?
If you can find someone to sponsor your team, you're in luck. Funding a team can be expensive. Consider t-shirt costs, registration fees and the cost of putting your team in a tournament. Equipment is also something to consider as many leagues require you to bring your own ball. If nobody on your team has a bat, your team will need one of those as well.
Finally, you should always keep your health in mind. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated during hot summer games. Wear the appropriate safety equipment. This is especially important for fastpitch softball catchers. If you feel dizzy, sit down. If you roll an ankle, keep it elevated and add ice. No matter what you do, safety should come first.
In general, playing in an adult summer softball league should be fun and stress-free. Try to keep things light-hearted, and keep your safety in mind. You never know, you might make some new friends or spend some time bonding with old ones.
