Advice On Entertaining On A Budget
posted on 08/06/2009
It's always fun to find new ways to save a penny here or there, but with the sign of economic times dragging out into what seems like forever-land, many of us are trying to find new and affordable ways to enjoy life without spending a lot of money doing it. One of my favorite ways to spend time with friends and family, without spending a lot of money is having a potluck or barbeque where everyone brings a side dish or snack of some sort.
Where's the Beef?
By simply coordinating with your guests, you can offer to supply the meat
hamburgers and hotdogs are a simple and affordable way to keep guests of all ages happy, but you could also consider chicken or lean cuts of steak as well.
Side Items
Most people have favorite recipes that they hold onto for special occasions like these. It's the opportunity they've been waiting for, to make that favorite spinach dip, or fruit salad, where they can share with friends and family. If you plan an event at your home, and ask everyone to bring a side dish or snack, let them know what the main course will be, so they can think of something they feel will go great on the table. Often times, letting your guests be a part of the plan makes them feel special and involved. Everyone loves to help when it comes to planning a party, and having a potluck is a great and easy way to do this.
You can make suggestions if people aren't sure what to bring, by keeping in mind what others might have already offered. Simple things like chips and dip, fruit and veggie trays, salads and pastas are all healthy, simple and affordable dishes that everyone can enjoy. And for those who don't like to cook, or are on an especially tight budget, ask them to simply bring a drink or two for everyone to enjoy.
Decorating
Who says it has to be a holiday before you can plan a party? I say every day is a holiday! You could always decorate with the theme of the season, an upcoming event for someone who's attending, or perhaps make up your own fun theme. However you choose, if you're feeling festive and you want to decorate without spending a lot of money; stores like the Dollar Store and Big Lots can be great places to find holiday decorations for not a lot of money.
Extras
You might think it sounds silly, but when you get together a group of people who love each other, and enjoy each other's company, sometimes the more quirky the entertainment, the better. Pick up a game of Twister, or Pin the Tail on the Donkey and have some good clean fun with your guests. Playing games that are simple and fun, are not only affordable, but add a bit of pizzazz to an ordinary get together, without a lot of effort. Those who chose to participate will have tons of fun, and those who choose to stand aside, will enjoy watching the games just as well.
Entertaining doesn't have to be expensive. All you need is a few good dishes on the table, and a handful of friends. Find something fun for everyone to do, and you're on your way to an event that could become an annual tradition, or a wonderful memory. Most of all, don't stress about the details, keep it simple, and enjoy the fun!
