Hobbies should be rewarding and pleasurable. They should involve something you love without question, and also something they you would be satisfied doing forever without pay.
This last competent is essential to writing as a hobby. This isn't to say that a lot of people don't make a lot of money writing, it's just to say that you shouldn't start writing for a hobby just because you also want to make a few bucks.
This will just cause tension in your life and the lives of those around you. The truth about writing for money and as a hobby is that you will be disappointed. There are just too many people writing. It's simple supply and demand economics. When the supply of writers is very high, the wages of writers will be very low (except of course for a very select group of people who have thoroughly established their reputation).
It can be very frustrating writing for peanuts. The internet brings a world were access is very simple. For instance, you can start a blog for nothing and post your writing, you can post of on forums, and you can find dozens of websites that will even pay you for your creative writing. And some will even pay you well.
But so can billions of other people. There is almost unlimited competition on the web, so it's important to have manageable expectations.
Hobbies should bring happiness and satisfaction. They should be something that always makes you happy, not something that is perpetually frustrating. A frustrating hobby defeats the whole purpose of having a hobby. A hobby is designed to be something that helps you relieve the stress that you get from all the other aspects of your life.
So again, if you want to write as a hobby, make sure it's as a hobby. Make sure writing is something you can be satisfied doing free of charge indefinitely.
