Advice On How To Save Money On A Family Vacation In Chicago
posted on 08/11/2009
Chicago is one of the greatest cities in America, and should not be missed by any traveler, old or young. In the summer there are festivals taking place every weekend, and during the holidays there are many celebrations downtown with lots of family friendly activities.
If possible, try to schedule your trip for a long weekend, ending on a Tuesday or Wednesday (or even longer if you'd like!) Many attractions offer free evening admission early in the week, and depending on the size of your family, this can save you a bundle. Otherwise, head to a library when you arrive, and take out a week-long family pass, which allows up to four people entry.
Alternatively, you can pick up a Chicago City Pass, which grants entry into many of the attractions, including the Sears Tower, Planetarium, Field Museum, and Museum of Science and Industry. The City Pass grants you entry into any of the attractions for up to a week from purchase date.
Another thing to do before arriving is check the city of Chicago's tourism website. Here, you can find street fairs, festivals, free concerts, and holiday events. The free concerts and movies in the park take place all summer long, usually on a weekly, or bi-weekly basis. You do not want to miss attending a free movie in the park with the beautiful Chicago skyline to the left, and sprawling Lake Michigan views to your right!
Depending on how you plan on getting around, you can save money by purchasing fare cards. The Chicago Transit Authority, which operates the public trains and buses sells passes for one day, five days, ten days, or thirty days. Using the CTA, you can get anywhere in the city, and even check out the different neighborhoods while you are en route, as many of the trains are elevated.
Take a little time to plan your trip ahead of time, and you will be rewarded with a family friendly and wallet friendly trip!
