Advice On Getting Work Done
posted on 08/17/2009
Introduction
Are you one of the many that have a hard time getting things done? Do you seem to push things until the last possible second and then find yourself rushing to get the job done? Well, like you, I used to have that same problem. I would have a project for school or a task at my job that needed to be done and I would keep coming up with reasons to push it to the next day. Finally I was done stressing over the work that I knew it had to stop and I would like to share with you guys on how it is done.
Start Early and Pace Yourself
When you are handed an assignment at your school or job most people look at the task as a whole. They don't think of the different steps it takes to accomplish the task. Take an essay for example. You first might need to read a book, do some reasearch, or interview a war veteran, then comile all of the facts you need, write an outline, and then finally write the essay. If you think about all of those steps and plan certain days for certain steps, your overall job will be a lot easier. Even if you do procrastinate on one of them, as long as you do the other steps then the step you are missing won't make you have to run around like a chicken with your head cut off. Organization is key to not being stressed.
Priorities
I know your life is not revolved around the task at hand, but you have to make time. You can push your beach trip with Cindy to another day so that you can work on writing the 20 page essay that is due in a week. Some people say that they can't keep up on their school work because they have a part time job. Well just think about which one is worth it. Would you rather pass school, get a degree, and make more money doing something you like, or would you rather fail school and continue working at that fast food place down the street? Although some people do make a living flipping burgers, I am sure that is not your idea of fun. So if your job and school gets to be too much, consider leaving the job for awhile or cut your hours so you can focus on your school work.
Get Help
Even though it might hurt your pride, some tasks might just be too hard for you to take on yourself. Consider finding someone who is willing to work on it with you, either volunteering their help or having you pay them. Maybe they can teach you things that you might have never thought of on your own to accomplish the task much quicker. This will also teach you how to work as a team, which is vital in almost any walk of life. Sometimes even going to the one who requested the task for help might provide you with the tools you need to successfully complete the job on time. Also, depending on the task assigned to you, maybe it is better for you to delegate tasks. Lets say you were at your job and your boss wanted you to sort and box five huge piles of paperwork for him by the time he gets in tomorrow morning. Now this might be too much for you alone but if you go up to one of your co-workers and ask him to box the paperwork while you sort it, then your job will be done in half the time, making you and your boss very content.
In Closing
I can't say it enough but don't stress yourself. Procrastinating is not good for anyones health because it leads to stress. Sort out your priorities and figure out the best schedule for your lifestyle and actually stick to it. Not everyone is perfect, so get help whenever it is needed.
