Advice On Moving Your Family For The Sake Of A Job
posted on 09/18/2009
In today's tough job market, one must be increasingly open to seeking employment a little farther from home. This can be a very tough decision if you have family to consider. Often in today's family, both mother and father are working or seeking work. If one person is employed already, but the other finds work in the next state it can be tough to decide what to do. The best advice is to look at the whole picture.Which company is better? Who will make more money? Are layoffs less likely in one company over the other? These are the questions that need to be asked.
If children are involved, a close look at the school system is needed. One must be sure that the move is not going to have a negative impact on the young student. Children adjust quickly, but if the school system is not up to par that will not matter much. Encourage open and frank discussion with the kids to see what their feelings on moving may be. This is especially vital if the child in question is a teen or preteen. Never hide the possibility of moving from them. This would just cause undue stress to the entire family.
Last and by no means least, the question of happiness must be answered. Will moving be a huge adjustment for either party? If so, look at alternatives, such as commuting, and telecommuting. Another option is to rent a separate apartment close to the job to avoid moving the whole family. Some do well with this type of arrangement. The bottom line is, if moving is going to cause major issues is it really worth it? Having a job, but losing a family is something that should be avoided at all costs. The old saying "money can't buy you love" still holds true, so always keep that in mind when making the decision to move for work.
