Advice On Simple Autumn & Halloween Pleasures
posted on 09/27/2009
Whenever I see the classic movie, To Kill A Mockingbird, I feel a bit of nostalgia. The scenes in which Scout is stumbling home from the school play, through the spooky woods, in her ham costume (even though it was simply Fall and not Halloween) remind me of Halloween when I was a child.
I am just barely old enough to remember Halloweens with mostly homemade costumes, real Halloween carnivals at school, and trick or treating in a safe, familiar neighborhood for homemade treats. Decorations were simple Jack O'Lanterns and scarecrows. We still actually bobbed for apples at Halloween parties, and we children all knew how to square dance because we had learned in music class. It was a fun and magical time that was fairly free of commercialism.
Today I am a hedge witch of sorts. Living close to nature in a spooky old house surrounded by bushes. I guess I do my share to frighten the neighborhood children at Halloween, just by being me! I enjoy the Autumn and Halloween and celebrate it in small daily ways. Here are a few that you can enjoy on your own or share with friends and family.
Make natural hot spiced cider anytime by the cup. Just put a Celestial Seasons Bengal Spice teabag in a mug, fill with natural apple juice, and microwave until piping hot. For maximum effect, cover the mug for about 5 minutes to let the teabag steep. Remove the teabag and enjoy.
Be sure to enjoy seasonal foods like nuts, apples, and squash. For store-bought or homemade spice breads, you can make a quick and easy nut spread by toasting chopped pecans and/or walnuts in the oven, toaster oven or in a pan with a little butter (stir constantly). Mix the browned nuts with whipped cream, vanilla yogurt, or honey and spread on gingerbread, banana nut bread, and the like. Perfect with your spiced cider.
Buy fresh, crisp apples to enjoy sliced and baked individually in the microwave with a little butter, honey, and cinnamon or simply fresh. If you peel your apples, try to peel the whole thing in one perfect spiral. If you succeed, toss the peel over your left shoulder. Tradition has it, it will fall in the shape of the initial of your true love!
