Advice On Winterizing Your Car
posted on 10/07/2009
Summer is over and autumn is here. Before you know it, it will be Christmas. That means winter weather. Cold mornings, wind, rain, sleet and snow. What's a car to do? If you live and don't travel out of southern states you might not require this information.
If not, first thing you want to do is make sure you have the right engine oil. Make sure you get the correct viscosity for the winter months (10W-30 or 10W-40). Check your owner's manual for their suggested oil.
Next thing you need to do is get the belts and hoses inspected. Winter is not the time to have a belt malfunction or break. Next, check that your wipers and fluid or up to par. Fill the reservoir with windshield cleaner and leave the remainder in your trunk.
Also in your trunk should be a winter kit. You should have several blankets, jumper cables, non perishable snacks, ice scraper, gloves, flashlight, flares, kitty litter (for traction), and a shovel. These are also good supplies to have in your trunk anytime. Make sure you have the right equipment to change a tire, should the need arise.
Check to see if you need a new battery. One good morning in -20 degree weather can cause a battery to not start. Cleaning the terminals on the battery and the posts of your car will ensure a good connection. Coating the posts with Vaseline will keep the parts free of corrosion for the life of the battery. If your battery is older than 4.5 years old.
I was once told to check the tires by going to an auto shop that does not sell tires. Get them to check the pressure and make sure the tires are still in good condition. Snow tires are the best tires to have year round.
While getting the tires checked also get your brakes checked. Get the heater, and defroster serviced as well, if necessary. Getting your coolant system flushed if necessary. It is a good idea to keep your gas tank full as much as possible. This will lessen the chance of water freezing in your gas line.
Most important, prepare the driver. Make sure you dress appropriately and get the proper rest. Don't drink and drive whether it's a party you are driving from or just going to the store.
