Advice On Getting Free Stuff!
posted on 10/16/2009
In the movie Mo' Money, Damon and Shawn Wayans tried everything to get the finer things in life. They soon found out, as Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross sang, "The Best Things In Life Are Free". There are many ways to get free and discounted products from companies and the Internet is a wonderful place to find the free offers. I use a website called Absurdly Cool Freebies. (http://absurdlycool.com/USA/all-freebies?h=50)
I took a few precautions before I responded to my first free offers. Whether I trusted the company or not, e.g. Proctor & Gamble or another company that I know nothing about. First I downloaded and installed McAfee SiteAdvisor (www.siteadvisor.com). SiteAdvisor shows levels of alerts when you visit a website. You can decide whether or not you want to stay. Green shows the site is okay. Yellow alerts you to proceed with caution and the red light advises visitors that the site is dangerous and has been known to spam or malware. A grey light means the site has not been tested yet and in the event a site is known to harm computers you are redirected to a default alert page.
I also set up an email account that I use only for offers and joining member sites like this one, Advice.com. Signing up for another email account will keep any spam you might receive from third party companies affiliated with the original company's offer. Generally this does not occur, but why chance it. I use a company, GMX for my second email. I recommend (www.gmx.com) over all the other email providers except maybe Gmail.
The last thing I make sure I do is print out a copy of the offer after I fill out the information and before I hit submit. I have proof that I submitted the offer and I know to look forward to receiving it in the mail. I also bookmark the company's homepage. After I receive the product I can discard the printout and delete the bookmark. This week I applied for a scripture calendar from Back to the Bible Ministries for myself and Joyce Meyer Ministries for my mother. I also submitted a request for a Texas Tech back pack and a sample candle.
