Advice On Getting More People To Read Your Blog
posted on 10/20/2009
Everyone has a blog. I have a few myself, and while most of them are just a collection of entries that I don't care whether people read or not, I do have a blog that I do want people to read. We all want people to read our thoughts and opinions, and here are a few ways to get more people to read about what you have to say.
Blog about What You Like
A lot of sites will tell you that in order to increase your blog traffic you have to write about a niche market. That's true, and being one of a handful of bloggers writing about a niche market will make it more likely that people will visit your blog, but if you don't have any interest in any kind of niche markets, don't worry about it.
A lot of writers are advised to write about what you know, but you should write about what you love. Stick to that. Readers are more interested in reading someone's entries that are passionate and interesting than a blogger whose entries read like a newspaper or a textbook.
Let your blog be a process that allows you to discover more about your subject matter as you go on, and your readers will learn right along with you. As time goes on, and you continue to update your blog, you'll find yourself gradually becoming an expert on the topic.
Befriend Other Bloggers
Chances are you won't be the only person blogging about your topic. That's okay; you don't have to feel threatened by that. Have a look at some of the most popular blogs dedicated to the topic that you're blogging about and pick out a few blogs to read on a regular basis.
If you like the blogs that you've been reading, leave comments regularly. Remember to add the blog to your favorites list. You can contact the other bloggers later and tell them how much you enjoy checking their blog for updates. Don't forget to tell them that you're blogging about the same topic as them and see if you can be a guest blogger and contribute.
Offer Something New and Unusual
After you've seen everything that other bloggers have blogged about, see if you can offer your readers something different that other blogs don't offer. Readers like to see something new and unusual.
It could be something as simple as a new perspective on an old topic or some little-known website or fact that deals with your topic. Readers will return just to see what new thing you have to offer them.
Stay on Topic
If you have a blog that's dedicated to a certain topic, you have to keep talking about that topic every time that you post. Try to keep your personal life out of it unless it's related to the subject matter of the blog. Your readers are there to read about your take on a subject, not about what's going on in your life.
Update Often
One thing that will keep readers away from your blog is if you never update. A blog is nothing more than a journal that people can read, and you should make entries regularly. You don't have to blog everyday if you don't want to, but you should at least write entries at least once a week.
Make It Public
Make sure that your blog is open to everyone. It's all right to have a blog that's open only to select individuals, but if you want to have lots of people come to your blog and comment, you can't exclude people. Make your readers feel welcome by making the blog public.
