How to Quit Smoking
We all know and realize the ill effects that smoking causes. Many of us think of quitting it but few succeed. It's not easy to quit, but it's not difficult either. If you have tried quitting earlier and failed, do not be discouraged. Those who have successfully quit smoking have had several failures. If you are serious about quitting smoking then read below to start a new journey to become a successful non-smoker.
Prepare before quitting
The first step is to prepare for quitting.
Decide positively that you are going to quit. Motivate yourself with the good results that it will bring.
It is important that you gather many strong personal reasons to quit. This will help you stay motivated.
Fix a specific date or occasion when you want to quit.
Start tuning your mind for this event.
Start reducing smoking a bit each day.
Do not let this date change due to any reasons what so ever.
Talk to your friends, relatives, co-workers and ask them to help you quit. Let everyone know that you are quitting.
Know the after effects
Do not imagine that quitting will be an easy action. There are several after effects and you should prepare yourself with those realistic expectations.
Comfort yourself with the fact that the days immediately after quitting will be difficult but these symptoms are ONLY TEMPORARY and will go away in 2 - 3 weeks time.
Just before quitting
Try practicing not smoking for long duration.
Try not carrying your cigarette pack when going out.
If you do smoke, smoke only half of the cigarette.
Avoid going near areas which is filled with smoke. Get your refrigerator stacked with some fresh juices you like.
Keep a good stock of chewing gums handy. Buy some good books for practicing Yoga for beginners.
Quitting Day
Finally on the day, throw away all your cigarette packs, lighters and anything related which may remind you of smoking.
Clean your room from all unwanted litters. Keep your room well ventilated.
Start keeping aside the amount of money that you would otherwise spend on cigarette.
Do not go near any place where others are smoking.
Stay away from alcohol or meat.
Immediately after quitting
This is the most important phase. Spend time reading some good books or watching your favorite TV programs.
Start practicing basic Yoga to tune your mind and body.
Keep some candies or chewing gums handy. You can eat them if you feel the urge to smoke.
Try staying away from alcohol for few weeks.
Start counting your savings daily. The savings will strengthen your desire to quit.
Drink large quantities of water, juice.
After you meals, keep yourself busy in some conversation or activity to avoid smoking. You could possibly brush your teeth to remove the thought of smoking.
A month later
If you have adhered to all techniques as given above, I am sure you would be a non-smoker by now. Don't think back and just relish the joy that it gives you to think that you are a non-smoker now. Also I am sure you realize its benefit and the amount of savings it brings.
