Advice On How To Use Facebook
posted on 10/28/2009
Someone sent me a request to be their "friend" on Facebook about a year ago. I had barely become accustomed to learning how to use myspace and thought that Facebook looked silly and difficult to use. I received a few more requests to join and finally decided to give it a try. Well, now I'm addicted. Facebook has become such a great way for me to feel connected to my family members who are far away as well as to re-connect with old friends.
I know it takes a while to get acquainted with using Facebook so I will try to provide some helpful hints. To start, sign up for a Facbook account at www.facebook.com. You will choose a username and a password that you will use to log in. You can check a box that says "Keep me logged in" to avoid having to log in each time.
Once you have logged in you will be directed to your home page. The home page features a live feed of what all of your friends are doing on Facebook. To begin basic communications with your friends you can write a message to each person on their profile page. ALL messages that you write on a profile page will be posted to the live news feed and will be viewed by everyone who is friends with that person. To send a private message use the inbox tab at the top of your home page. Composing a message this way is the same as sending a private email. The notifications icon in the lower right hand corner notifies you anytime that someone responds to something you have posted or commented on. You can also initiate a private chat with any of your friends that are currently online.
You can upload pictures from your computer to share with your friends. Click on the Photos tab on your profile page and follow the directions to upload pictures and create photo albums.
The third major use of Facebook is the status update box (also known as the "What's on your mind" box.) When you type in something in this box you will be posting your thought to all friends on the news feed. Do not make the mistake of writing a message to a friend in this box. You will be made fun of! You must go to a person's profile page to address the message to them.
Once you become accustomed to these basic operations on Facebook you will have a better understanding of the way the site works and you will begin to find many more activities to become involved in!
Happy Facebooking!
