Requested: Advice On Sexual Harassment
posted on 10/23/2009
Abut two weeks ago I was working at my part-time job at a university and there was no one else around and the building was quiet. I decided to go across the hall to make copies. I was looking at the papers that needed to be copied as I went into the hall but noticed that one of the professors was coming down the hall. He was, I later learned, also on his way to make copies. He was about 10 feet further away from the copy room than I was and as I continued to the copy room he ran up behind me and was so close I could pretty much feel him breathing down my neck. I was about 5 feet from the copy room and just kept walking and tried to ignore him, but he stayed right behind me as I went into the room. The copy room is what used to be an outer office and there is an office on the other side. I was really glad to see the inner office door open and the light on meaning Hal was in his office. When we went into the copy room I think this other guy noticed too that Hal was there and he backed off. I told him to go ahead and make his copies first as I had a lot to make and it would take me a while. He made his copies, said thanks, and went on his way, but I was a little freaked out.
He rarely hangs around the office, usually just checks his mailbox and leaves, and I have never really talked to him so that made it all the more weird. Then on Friday he came into the office to check his mailbox and left just as he normally does and I was relieved as he left the office, until he poked his head back around the corner, waved at me and then left again.
Should I be concerned about this?
