Requested: Advice On Merging A Feline And Canine Into A New Home
posted on 11/03/2009
I have a 7 yr old female cat who is, of course, the princess of the house. She has been my only pet since I adopted her at 4 months old. She is a bit skittish and doesn't do well with change. That being said I am moving in with my boyfriend soon (whom she isn't the biggest fan of) who has a 7 year old male lab and am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to make it an easier transition. The house is 2 stories and the upstairs can be blocked off, which is what I was thinking of making the dog-free zone. His dog mainly lives with his mom and is only there on weekends sometimes. Any advice would be appreciated!

I remember when my boyfriend (who is now my husband) and I were first moving in together. I had two dachunds and he had a 7 year old male cat. I was petrified at getting them together. I mean, these two dogs had brought home frogs, birgs.....they had killed animals!!! I was really afraid that they would kill his cat. He wasn't worried. He said, "the cat will take care of himself. He still has his claws." The first time he put the cat down in the house, the dogs cornered it in the kitchen. My husband was still cool. Then I saw the cat strike out at one dog's nose with his claw and the dog went running away whimpering. After that.....they seemed to have a truce. And there was peace in the house. So, if your cat has its claws, I wouldn't worry at all.
